Since ages, milk products like buttermilk and ghee were an integral part of Ayurveda. Do you know buttermilk helps in easy digestion and assimilation of nutrients? Buttermilk is even one step ahead of yogurt just for the reason that it does not increase Kapha. Further buttermilk is known for its sour taste and astringent.
The hot potency of this milk product helps beat the heat and has the capacity of mitigating Kapha and Vata doshas. It has a soothing effect on the digestive system. It is an excellent detoxifying agent and flushes out all unwanted things from the digestive tract.
Ancient Ayurvedic texts say that the one who takes buttermilk regularly will be free from diseases and the drink is considered as Amrit or divine nectar. Apart from replenishing the intestinal flora the drink is a must if you are suffering from constipation and has difficulty in excretion. The only caution for having this is to avoid the drink if you have Pitta vitiation.
Here’s the spiced buttermilk recipe for you :
A cup of fresh yogurt
Some mint leaves
Some curry leaves
Some coriander leaves
Pinch of freshly grated ginger
One green chili
Cup of water
Pinch of Asafoetida
A tablespoon of ghee
Directions: Take a cup of yogurt and add another cup of water and blend them well with coriander leaves, mint, green chilli and ginger until frothy. Keep this aside and heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds and Asafoetida and curry leaves. Transfer the mixture to the froth and mix well and consume.
