The use of honey was discovered about 2000 years back. Honey contains a treasure chest of hidden nutritional and medicinal value for centuries. The sweet golden liquid from the beehive is popular because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Honey is believed to be as effective as the common cough suppressant ingredient dextromethorphan. It can be used in treating upper respiratory tract infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists honey as a demulcent, which is a substance that relieves irritation in your mouth or throat by forming a protective film. Honey is effective in curing cough.

Because of the antibacterial properties of honey it can be used as an ointment for wounds and burns. It is one of the antibiotics that can be used both internally and externally.
